Saiyans from the Animes Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT have the ability to transform into what is called a Super Saiyan. This can be performed at four levels, incrementally. Each additional form increases their power level significantly over the previous form.

The ability to become a Super Saiyan was once considered to be a myth, because it had not been performed for over a thousand years until Goku accomplished it when he was fighting Frieza on Planet Namek. Their appearance is different in each form, more so in the fourth.

Level 1: Their hair stands on end, and glows a bright yellow colour. Their eyes turn green.
Level 2: Their hair becomes more pointed, and continues to glow. Their eyes turn blue.
Level 3: Their hair grows until it reaches almost to their knees at the back, their eyebrows disappear and their eyes stay blue.
Level 4: ( This form was not created by Akira Toriyama, thus most fans think that level 3 is the strongest, and this is just a add-on )This form is different. Their hair is black again, their tail is returned and their bodies are covered in red fur. They also get some red around the eyes.
 

Halfbreed Saiyans also have the ability to become Super Saiyans, but are thought to be unable to attain level 4, because they are not full blooded saiyans. (This is a rumor, and does not seem to be true. In Dragon Ball GT, Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. [descendants of Goku and Vegeta respectively] are only 1/16th Saiyan and they still have the ability to go Super Saiyan)

Many hard core fans of the series do not accept Super Saiyan 4 as a real Super Saiyan level, because it was introduced during Dragonball GT.

Super Saiyan 1

• Broly
• Gohan
• Goku
• Goten
• Future Trunks is only reaches Super Saiyan 1, but attained a higher overall strength by powering up significantly. This is known as "Ultra Super Saiyan", but is not actually listed as a real level, because it is just a beefed up Super Saiyan 1. This is the state Vegeta was in when he called himself Super Vegeta in the fight against Imperfect Cell.

• Majin Vegeta

Super Saiyan 3

• Gotenks

Super Saiyan 4

It can be assumed that, had he not been killed, Broly would have been able to attain the higher levels, as he is The Legendary Super Saiyan.
