Yuu Yuu Hakusho (幽★遊★白書) is a manga in Shonen Jump
magazine and an anime series by Yoshihiro Togashi. The anime consists of
112 TV episodes and two movies.
Background
Yuusuke's life takes a rather dramatic turn when he is killed when
trying to save a boy from being hit by a car. While floating around as a
spirit, Yuusuke realises that people still need him. Eventually, Yuusuke
gets his life back and discovers a new power, he can see beings from the
spirit world (youkai). This is when the series really kicks off. He is
enlisted as a spirit realm detective (Reikai Tantei), to help control the
actions of spirits in the real world. His first assignment is to round up
three demon prisoners who escaped and stole three terribly powerful
artifacts. His next assingment involve a power demon named Suzaku and a
demon whistle, in this mission he is assisted by Kazuma, Kurama, and Hiei.
Then the following mission involves the Koorime,Yukina, who has been
kidnapped by the evil Tarukane.
Characters
Yuusuke Urameshi (Yusuke Urameshi in English Version)
Yuusuke is the toughest kid in Sarayashiki High School (Sarayashiki
Middle School in English Version) and has a typical tough guy approach to
everything. He's also the main charater of the show. He becomes a spirit
detective after he had died and was revived by Keiko's kiss. Yusuke must
face powerful demons and make rash decisions but it shouldn't be to tough
with his friends by his side.
Kazuma Kuwabara
Kuwabara is the second toughest kid in the school and was always trying
to get Yusuke's spot. He has a soft spot for kittens and an iron code of
honor. He also habor a enormous crush on the ice apparition Yukina. As the
show progress Yusuke and Kuwabara cease being rivals and become great
friends.
Keiko Yukimura (Kayko Yukimura in English Version)
Although Yuusuke vehemently denies it, Keiko is his girlfriend. Her
personality is almost the exact opposite of his and she keeps up with her
schoolwork much better than Yuusuke.
Koenma-Daioh (just Koenma in English version)
Looks like an infant, but he is the ruler and general manager of spirit
realm (Reikai). He hires Yuusuke on as spirit detective after he helps him
come back to life.
Botan
Originally assigned by Koenma to be Yuusuke's spirit guide after the
fatal car accident, she becomes his case manager when he becomes spirit
detective.
Jaganshi Hiei
Hiei is a fire/Koorime demon (youkai) who specializes in speed,
swordsmanship and Evil King Fiery Murderous Fist (Jaou Ensatsu Ken). He is
know as the forbidden one because he's a fire demon born to an Koorime
(Ice apparation).He posesses a Jagan (Evil Eye), which amplifies his power
and enables him to summon the fires of Makai (Demon Realm), he also got it
because he wanted to watch Yukina. Originally, he was one of the three
demons Yuusuke fought on his first case, but he became a valuable ally
afterwards. His twin sister is Yukina.
Kurama/Minamino Shuiichi
Kurama is a demon who wields the power to use plants as lethal weapons.
He was one of the three demons Yuusuke faced on his first case, but he did
not fight Yuusuke, for he was trying to use the artifact to save his
mother. He was originally the kitsune, Youko Kurama until he was trapped
and only barely escaped into a human baby. He grew up as Shuiichi, and
regrets the grief he has given his human mother.
Genkai
The aged psychic who held a tournament to decide who would be her
successor. Yusuke wins and defeats the demon, Rando. She trains Yuusuke in
the Spirit Light Wave Fist (Reikou Hadou Ken) and coaches him to the
extreme.
Yukina
She is an ice youkai (apparition) who was captured by mobsters,
Tarukane, who wanted to use her tears to produce jewels. Yuusuke, Botan
and Kuwabara rescue her from the compound. She return later during the
Ankoku Buutsukai (Dark Tourment) looking for her brother (she wasn't aware
that Hiei is her brother)
Atsuko Urameshi
Atsuko is Yusuuke's alcoholic mother. She tries to raise him into a
respectable citizen despite her addiction to alchohol.
The teachers (Mr. Akashi, Mr. Iwamoto, Mr. Takenaka)
Yuusuke doesn't get along to well with his teachers at school. Mr.
Akashi and Mr. Iwamoto hate him and his friends. They try every trick in
the book to expel them. Mr. Takenaka believes that Yuusuke is a truly good
person, and only scolds him when needed.
