Japan's Telecommunication Industry
From our: Japan Business Reports Feature
This report is available from: Eurotechnology Japan

Japan is the first country globally to a introduce packet switched wireless network (DoPa), the first country to introduce wireless internet (i-Mode) in 1999, camera-phones, 3G in 2000 and 3.5G in 2003. With about 1 Million fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) subscribers, and 30 Million FTTH subscribers planned for 2010, and about 10 million ADSL subscribers Japan also has one of the most advanced broadband infrastructures in the world. We expect Japan to be at the forefront of innovation both in wired and wireless telecommunication services. Therefore, understanding the state-of-the-art in telecommunications requires understanding the telecommunication landscape in Japan. The present report delivers such an overview and is required reading for any telecommunication professional, who wishes to understand today's state-of-the-art.

This report is based on a presentation to an audience of industry specialists and Embassy staff in the Residence of His Excellency the German Ambassador to Japan in Tokyo and at a "First Tuesday" meeting to investment professionals at the Swiss Stock Exchange in Zurich and on many other occasions. Our report is regularly updated to take account of latest developments (the present version contains data as of March 14, 2005).
