Shuriken - throwing blades

Shuriken are throwing blades.

The major varieties are the Bo Shuriken (Dart) and the Hira Shuriken (Throwing blade with multiple points, sometimes called Shaken but more commonly known in the West as a Throwing Star). The art or skill of throwing Shuriken is called Shuriken-jutsu.

Contrary to popular belief (ie videogames, hollywood, etc,) shuriken are not designed as a primary weapon, but rather as a distraction or tactical weapon. The first shurikens were actually sharpened hairpins, kept in the hair as a last resort weapon.
