Why is a commentary on an anime film in the History forum? Because it should be seen by anyone interested in the history of Japan, especially WWII history, and not just anime fans.

I have known of Grave of the Fireflies for some time but saw it for the first time last night. For those who don't know, it is the story of two children in WWII Japan who witness the firebombing of Kobe and the tragic events which follow. The film was very powerful and I was surprised by two points in particular.

There was little mention of "the enemy". The story remains focused on the characters without delving into historical commentary or opinion. Regardless of your views on the events, you will find yourself engrossed in the lives of these two characters rather than contemplating who did what and why.

I'm not an anime fan. I almost forgot it was anime after the first few minutes. The voices and actions of the characters are so well done that they take on a life of their own. The young girl in particular, named Setsuko, is adorable. Watching the extra features I learned they actually employed a 5 year old girl for the voice and, contrary to typical productions, allowed her to read the lines in her own way and then animated the character to fit the emotions and tone.

I plan to share more details and opinion in the Japan Reviewed (http://www.japan-101.com/reviews/) section I just started. Until then, rent this movie. You can find it at Blockbuster and you won't regret it. Be sure to watch it in Japanese with English subtitles. You may be tempted to watch it in the default English language voiceover but the voices were poorly done in this version and you'll miss an important part of the film.

I don't think I would recommend this one for children. There is little or no graphic violence but the story is very tragic and very adult. It is a sad film which would need to be explained to a younger audience lacking historical perspective and maturity.

It is the saddest movie I ever saw. I am an anime fan but think more people would like this. They should make it into a real film.

Interesting little fact from the film:

In the story it is learned that the father of the children is a Naval officer assigned to the Japanese heavy cruiser Maya. Maya is also the name of a small mountain overlooking the city of Kobe. Now, if you watch the end of the film, the last scene is one of the two children sitting on a bench overlooking the modern city of Kobe. I'm guessing they are on this mountain with the name of their father's ship. My wife and I have speculated as to the reason for this scene which is obviously some 50 years after the main story looking upon a city with modern brighlty lit skyscrapers.

The heavy cruiser Maya (shown below) was sunk in The Battle of Leyte Gulf in October, 1944.

Rent? Definately a "Buy It Now."

Why?

1) It's from Studio Ghibli, which is the Disney of anime. Ghibli is also the home studio the anime master Hayao Miyazaki, who has produced some of the greatest anime of all time.

2) It forces you to put on someone else's shoes for a while. After watching "Fireflies," it may be a day or so before you can shake it. It truly makes you think.

3) If you've ever been an older brother, this hits home.

Worthless trivia: The initial showing of "Grave of the Fireflies" was doubled with another Ghibli film: "My Neighbor Totoro."

I think the idea of making it a real film is great.
At these troubling times there is a social order for such strong anti-war statement.

Link fixed, thanks. As mentioned, I'm not an anime fan either but this was a suprise. It took me a few minutes to get past the rather choppy typical Japanese animation style but after that the story and characters took over and I couldn't turn away. Your results may vary.

Just wanted to update with some interesting info....

A couple of months back, a LIVE action version of "Hotaru no Haka" aired on NTV. It was very true to the anime version, with an added backstory intro and exit. The actors portraying the children were spot on. At one time, this was floating around the Asian torrent sites, but it may be hard to find. No info on a potential DVD yet.

For some pics and info, please visit the official site.

WOW Its so interesting! I really have to see this.
The actors look so similar than in the drawn version. It's amazing. I wonder if they can portrait the actual bombing as horrifying as in the anime version. I have never felt as strong as when I watched Hotaru no Haka.

I have the anime version as original DVD. I want to buy this one too when it comes out.

I also took a look of NTV website which really rocks from website design point of view! http://www.ntv.co.jp/

Japanese visual designers have really nice style.

It does look so similar to the original, which I just saw for the first time last week. So sad. Malnutrition is so ignored in stories of war.
