I'm usually partial to yakitori (teriyaki chicken on a stick).
However, I was recently introduced to "koro oke" via a bento box special at my favorite JP eatery. It is basically mashed potatoes with chicken rolled into a ball, breaded, then deep fried.
Too much goodeness!

Sashimi without a doubt. I can do without the rice and eat piles of salmon, tuna and other raw fish all night. The only problem with sashimi is the cost of it in respectable restaraunts. It's not easy to drop $100 on one dinner for the average traveler. You have to take it in moderation or go to a good market and get your own which is what I do now.
Once I even ate horse sashimi, yes horse. That must seem odd or even crazy to many. This is not common in Japan. I think it was in Kyushu in a very traditional hotel. I recall this was a dish found only in this region.

I too ate raw horse (basashi), but in Yokohama. It was served to me, otherwise I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been my choice. I also ate beef sashimi, unlike the fairly bland basashi it was delicious but it had been marinated.

Whenever I hear someone mention "Takoyaki", I remember Osaka. There are many Takoyaki-ya(restaurant which serves Takoyaki) in Osaka. The number is the most in Japan.
We often cook Takoyaki. I reported the process in my weblog (http://blog.side.secret.jp/?eid=280232).
