The interesting thing is that if Japan was to really act in its own
self-interest, considering the welfare imposed on the country as a whole,
it would open its borders to trade. Such a move would, in the long run,
increase Japans domestic welfare, and the welfare of all of its trade
partners... However, the politicians are bowing to the wishes of a
powerful special interest groups - rice farmers - and are refusing to
