The traditional
Japanese
inn, or ryokan (旅館), dates from the
Edo Era (1603-1868).
Catering to travellers, they should have
tatami rooms, a communal bath, and other shared areas where visitors
can wear
yukatas (light dressing gowns) and talk with the owner. Ryokan are
difficult to find in
Tokyo because they are uneconomic compared with
hotels. For example, it is costly to maintain the tatami mats. |

Japan Public Commuter Train Thoughts |
I
would like to explain how the train system is truly un-Japanese... In the
80's I remember looking at pictures of people in white gloves pushing
commuters back into the car trying to push more and more people into the
car. I sort of thought that it was something that was more fiction than
reality...but the trains are a place where the rules of Japanese society
are suspended and the real demons come out. (read

Akihabara - Electric Town |

Akihabara is also known as Akihabara Electric Town (Akihabara Denki Gai).
It is located less than five minutes by rail from Tokyo station, Tokyo,
Japan. It is sometimes shortened to Akiba by locals. While there is an
official locality named Akihabara nearby, part of Taito-ku, the area known
as Akihabara (including the JR railway station of the same name) to most
people is actually Soto-Kanda, a part of Chiyoda-ku. (read
