The Roto Trilogy is the name of 3-related
role playing games by
Enix in the
Dragon Quest
video game series.
Dragon Quest I is the first game of the Roto Trilogy. It takes
place many years after Roto's death. The main character of Dragon
Quest I is the decendant of Roto, the legendary hero.
Dragon Quest II is the second game of the Roto Trilogy. It takes
place after Dragon Quest. The main characters of Dragon Quest
II are decended from the hero of Dragon Quest I and the
princess he saves during his adventure.
Dragon Quest III is the third game of the Roto Trilogy. Unlike
the others, Dragon Quest III's relation to the Roto Trilogy is
kept a secret until the very end of the game. The hero of Dragon Quest
III starts in a different universe, but, after vanquishing a great
evil, is teleported to the universe of Dragon Quest I and
Dragon Quest II to defeat the source of the evil. In doing so, he
inadvertently destroys the link between his home universe and Dragon
Quest I's universe.
At the end of Dragon Quest III, the king bestows upon the hero
the title Roto, or "Legendary Hero." So, at the end of the game, during
the credits, you learn that Dragon Quest III 's hero is actually
the person whom the other two games' heros are decended from. Dragon
Quest III is a prequel to the other 2 games, a technique
Yuji Horii would later use in
Dragon Quest VI
